Early next morning I collected Min from Wisma Utara and we set off for Teluk Gong where we were due to meet Min’s family. At the start of the journey, Min seemed a bit solemn but fortunately no worse than that. My new driver impressed me not only with his careful driving but also with his calm and sympathetic tone when addressing Min.As we moved through the traffic I thought of what I had been writing in my diary the night before. How objective was it? I honestly couldn’t remember with one hundred per cent accuracy how each member of Min’s family had reacted to him on his return to his family home. I was not confident that I had recorded the conversations with total fairness and without error.I suspected that my diary, like many works of non-fiction, was full of selectivity, prejudice and opinion, as opposed to fact. Probably I selected the bits that put me in a good light; probably I failed to notice lots of significant things that happened.I suspect that if Min’s brother, Wardi, had written a diary of these events it would have contained some major differences of interpretation.Did the family want Min to continue for a bit longer at his school? Were they interested in moving to a house near Wisma Utara? I did not know. They had a Sundanese-Javanese way of being reluctant to voice their opinions, particularly to someone richer than themselves. Their ideas and attitudes were influenced not only by universal human nature but also by their own local world which I did not fully understand.Min perked up as we approached his home in the slums near the airport; he stood up in his seat and called out exultantly, Min, Min.We parked beside a vegetable stall, climbed out of the vehicle, and were met by Min’s big brother, Wardi, Min’s mother, Wati, Min’s two little brothers, Aldi, aged about eleven, and Itin, aged about five, and little sister Imah, aged about four. They had all put on their best clothes and were looking a bit ill at ease. It occurred to me that maybe they felt intimidated by people like me who arrived in big cars.How about a trip to Ragunan zoo in South Jakarta? I asked, after we had exchanged greetings.OK, said Wardi, with a touch of a smile. Wati nodded in approval.Have you been there before? I asked.No, Mr Kent. We have no money, explained Wardi.We crowded into my Mitsubishi van and set off down the narrow potholed street. Happy, almost jubilant, expressions began to appear on the faces of Wati, Wardi and Aldi as we were chauffeur-driven past bemused neighbours, barefoot children and skinny goats. This is why no peaceful resolution is in the cards for the MidEast.The Book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament is an amazing book, in that it details the entire history of the Jewish people in the MidEast, all the way from ancient Judea and Sumaria to the re-establishment of Israel as a state in 1948, to a short period of peace, to the worst war in the history of mankind taking place with Iran(Persia) the main opponent of Israel, but drawing in many dangerous and powerful world armies in support. Israel is preparing for a major offensive in Gaza within hours, and even an emergency visit by Secretary Of State, Condoleezza Rice, has been probably fruitless to stop this escalation into further violence and no peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Instead with Iraq, Afghanistan and a deterioration into chaos in Israel, and an Iran intent on nuclear weapons, the MidEast will only sink into further dark clouds of war.The dance between the government of Israel and the Palestinians may go on a little longer.

My Monday:12:20 – Finally get to bed.  With the short weekend (home only two days this week), there was lots to get done and no time to do it.4:20 – Kill the alarm, but get up anyway.4:50 – with two cups of coffee, in disposable cups, take off in rental car for the hour long drive to the airport (time estimated at maximum speed)5:45 fill up rental car5:55 – turn in rental car6:02 – wait in line for tickets…6:06 – have ticket lady tell me that I had missed my 6:30 flight because I wasn’t checked in 30 minutes before the flight.6:15 – look at the plane I was supposed to be on just sit there, beckoning.  Am told that since I have checked baggage that I cannot stand by my original flight.  6:30 – sit fuming about the stupidity of modern air travel.7:15 – achieve a stand-by flight going the opposite way than my final destination.  My original flight was non-stop.  I will now have a layover.8:20 – race through major airport to stand-by another flight.8:35 – hear announcement that the stand-by flight I was able to get on is delayed because the pilot was stuck in traffic.9:10 – the 8:30 flight takes off.9:15 – wake up to the sound of a jarringly familiar sleep-snort.9:25 – wonder how the rest of the day will go.10:30 – arrive at destination site10:50 – take shuttle to rental car, off-site location11:00 – fail to rent car due to credit card declined…11:01 – slowly begin to panic (return is not till Thursday, no other means of payment, far from client site…)11:04 – begin waiting on hold with Credit Card Company11:51 – finally get off of hold11:58 – ask customer service rep repeated why it took them a week to notice a slew of new charges, and then why they didn’t call instead of cutting me off in the middle of a trip, causing me to wait on hold almost an hour and to be late for a meeting…12:00 – get no satisfactory answers, but do get a car.12:01 – start a new work week.

(In a very small way, this was the impetus behind the Russell books, following a young woman in the process of discovering that the scorned “women’s intuition” may be precisely the same thing as the much-vaunted deductive process of a great mind.) Women secretly suspect they they are stronger than men in all the ways that count. Even younger women laugh among themselves at the preening exercises of their male peers.One begins to wonder if a lot of religious doctrine isn’t just a way of encouraging men to be more like women.

Aristotle wrote on happiness, and I will summarize his main points briefly:· Nobody agrees what happiness actually is (and therefore what good actions are), but for the sake of argument, Aristotle uses “what is obvious or moral” Aristotle deals with the tricky matter of whether happiness is an end in itself or a means to good. Finally, our reading concludes that the contemplative life is the ultimate happiness (p.86).Aristotle’s argument is so beautifully written and so logically laid out, that it is possible to get swept away in its conclusions without questioning some of his basic assumptions. 4) extremes are vices and the mean is virtue and 5) happiness should be our ultimate goal.The essence of human nature has been studied by scientists for centuries, and still there is no agreement about the nature of human goodness. If suffering is necessary (such as Christ’s atonement) for happiness to shine, then according to Aristotle, suffering could also been understood as good.Aristotle has an unhealthy notion of the hierarchy of happiness when he writes on page 64, “the common run of people and the most vulgar identify [happiness] with pleasure,” I think pleasure, including bodily pleasure (associated with women as well as lower classes), should be considered part of the whole of happiness and not a lower subset. Jim made it out briefly on Saturday to get stuff to make chili but then we got another round of ice that make the streets treacherous. It took me about 10 minutes to get them all dressed in their warm clothes. They were back inside again within about 10 minutes and cuddling under my electric throw blanket.
